Berlin, 7 May 2026. The Redeker Sellner Dahs law firm has set up an independent Advisory Board for the Konrad Redeker Prize for Rule of Law, Integrity and Resilience. Selection of prize‑winners is performed with the assistance of the five members of the external Advisory Board, made up of Prof. Dr Angelika Nuss‑berger (former Vice‑President of the European Court of Human Rights), Dr Katarina Barley (Vice‑President of the European Parliament), Prof. Dr Johannes Masing (former Judge of the Federal Con‑stitutional Court), Prof. Dr Michael Eichberger (former Judge at the Federal Constitutional Court) and Prof. Dr Andreas Paulus (former Judge at the Federal Constitutional Court).
The Konrad Redeker Prize was awarded for the first time in 2025. It commends lawyers who have shown exceptional courage and personal commitment in championing the independence of the judiciary and legal profession while contributing to safeguarding the principles underlying the rule of law. The first recipient was US‑American lawyer Rachel Cohen, whose high‑profile parting from her law firm at the time sent out a clear message protesting the threat to independence of lawyers in the USA.
“The prize is meant to pay tribute to individuals who under difficult conditions champion the principles underpinning the rule of law, namely the autonomy of the judiciary. The independent Advisory Board bolsters our aspiration to base this choice solely on merit,” explains Dr Ulrich Karpenstein, partner at the firm and Vice‑President of the German Bar Association.
The Advisory Board also views the prize as an important signal in times of mounting challenges to the rule of law. “The Konrad Redeker Prize singles out lawyers who stand their ground when the princi‑ples of the rule of law come are being eroded. Bringing these achievements to the fore is more im‑portant today than ever before,” is how Prof. Dr Angelika Nussberger describes her affiliation with the Advisory Board.
The award ceremony for the Konrad Redeker Prize for the Rule of Law, Integrity and Resilience for the year 2026 is to take place on in Berlin on 4 September 2026.
